State of Post-Launch Pre-Revenue SaaS 2026

What founders who already shipped (but have not yet earned their first paying customer) are actually getting wrong, drawn from real diagnostic submissions during 2026.

Headline finding

Edition 2026: enrollment open. The cohort has 0 of 30 submissions needed for the percentage findings to publish.

Below this threshold, a 95% confidence interval on the label distribution would be wider than any single label’s expected share – the percentages would obscure more than they reveal. The page publishes once the cohort crosses 30 submissions, and the canonical citation + license framework below is live now so re-users can pre-cite the edition.

Why this year matters: the macro context

2026 is the year the post-launch pre-revenue cohort gets materially larger, not smaller. Two forces are stacking: the tech-employment correction (publicly tracked at layoffs.fyi) keeps pushing salaried SaaS operators out of full-time roles, and the AI-tools stack (Lovable, Claude, Replit, v0, Cursor, Bolt.new) keeps lowering the cost of shipping a first product to roughly a weekend of evenings. The predictable outcome is more people sitting on a deployed URL with no paying customers – the exact cohort this report describes.

Greg Isenberg has gone on record (X, 2026) with the thesis that 2026 will see 100k+ SaaS-company layoffs, with a meaningful share of those workers attempting a founder path next. That thesis is consistent with what the diagnostic submission stream is starting to show: more first-time founders, more “shipped last weekend with AI tooling” product URLs, more “I used to work in SaaS, now I am trying to build one” framing in the qualitative fields the aggregator does not read.

The 2026 edition does not re-frame what the cohort needs – the diagnosis vocabulary (Wrong Person, Weak Offer, Weak Belief) is unchanged from prior framing work, and the offer is unchanged. The macro layer just predicts the COHORT will grow faster than the rest of the indie-SaaS landscape, and argues that the “name one real person, make one real promise, sell it before it feels ready” playbook matters more in a year where the supply of fresh founders spikes than in a year where it does not.

Sources for this macro framing are public and externally trackable: layoffs.fyi for the tech-employment correction, Isenberg’s X account for the founder-supply thesis, and the diagnostic submission stream itself for the qualitative shift. Specific layoff totals and the founder-share split are not republished here because they fluctuate; the citable surface for those numbers is the upstream tracker, not this page.

Methodology

The cohort for the 2026 edition is every founder who pasted a real product URL into the free Launch Diagnostic during the 2026-01-012026-12-31 calendar- year window. The diagnostic returns one of three labels – Wrong Person, Weak Offer, or Weak Belief – following Russell Brunson’s Four Core Stories framework. The headline finding of the edition is the percentage share of each label across the year’s submissions.

Engine-failure rows (label = “error”) are excluded from the cohort. They represent infrastructure failures, not founder diagnoses, and including them would distort the share calculation by counting failure modes that have nothing to do with the founder’s page.

What the aggregator reads

  • label – the diagnostic classification.
  • bucket – the free-text bucket tag (may be null; not used in the 2026 headline).
  • created_at – ISO timestamp, used only to bucket the row into the correct calendar-year edition.

What the aggregator deliberately does NOT read

  • email, ip, user_agent – never read, never aggregated, never published.
  • product_url, headline, explanation, evidence – not read. Re-identifying a founder by URL + diagnosis would defeat the privacy posture, and the headline narrative does not need row-level prose.
  • analysis_detail, recent_revenue, biggest_attempt, time_since_launch – not read. Future editions may aggregate these as anonymized distributions, with a separate sample-size gate per column.

The published numbers are de-identified by construction – no row-level data ever leaves the aggregator function. See the editorial policy for the corrections workflow and the privacy notice for how the underlying diagnostic submissions are stored.

Editorial floor: percentages publish only once the cohort reaches 30submissions. Below threshold the page renders an honest enrollment-open shell with the current count – never fabricated percentages, never a hidden “shipped report” with bad math.
