# Should I give my product away for free to build an audience?

**Verdict: No** – No – free users are the wrong audience and the wrong feedback loop.

> No. Free users teach you what free users want, which is rarely what buyers want. The signal you need at pre-revenue is whether anyone will exchange money for your product – free distribution actively suppresses that signal. A $1 tripwire builds a better audience than a free product because the buyer's behaviour is fundamentally different from the freeloader's.

## Why

- Free users churn 10 to 20x faster than paying users, even at $1/month. The 'audience' is mostly a vanity metric.
- Support cost-to-revenue ratio on free users is infinite. You spend the same on support but capture no revenue to fund the work.
- Cheaper alternative: ship a $1 Starter that delivers something genuinely useful. Same lead-gen function, real customer feedback, no freeloader cost.
